ALBUM PIXEL SORT
10/18/18

This post is the result of a random idea I had several weeks ago: what would it look like if you grouped all the pixels in an album cover by color?

An album’s cover art can play a huge role in contextualizing its music, and many covers can even stand alone as works of art. But what happens if you obscure the form of the cover, leaving only the color behind?

Some cool results, apparently. It was fun to see how certain albums with unique color palettes were still recognizable even as the cover was reduced to essentially colored noise. Below are the sorted results for Kanye’s discography - can you identify them all? (tap or hover to show the original cover)

If you want to play around with this yourself, I made a custom album sorter you can check out here! A note: I’ve found that albums with a distinct color scheme or gradient generally produce the best results.
